Planning to conduct a program evaluation, quality assurance or improvement project at the college but not sure if it needs research ethics approval? Simply complete the screening form below and email it to researchethics@bowvalleycollege.ca for a quick review. REB will advise if further ethics review is needed and provide support with ethics guidelines.

If you plan on having BVC learners do research as part of your class or research involving human participants is part of their Work Integrated Learning (WIL) / Capstone Project experience, you may be required to get REB approval at least one (1) month prior to the start of the term. Please contact researchethics@bowvalleycollege.ca to find out if you need to submit a Course-Based Research Ethics Form.

If your proposal is of minimal risk and/or if a research ethics board at another institution has already approved your project, you may be eligible for an Expedited Review. Contact researchethics@bowvalleycollege.ca to find out whether you are eligible for an expedited review. If the board confirms that your project qualifies for an expedited review, complete the Expedited Review Form and submit it to researchethics@bowvalleycollege.ca

External Researchers-If you are an external researcher wanting to do research at Bow Valley College or using Bow Valley College faculty, staff, and/or learners as participants, you must complete a Research Ethics Application. If you have received ethics approval at another institution, you may be eligible for an Expedited Review.

During the research process, things may not always go as planned. You may need to make changes or ask for an extension to complete your research. If so, please fill out a Modification of an Approved Project form or an Extension of an Approved Project form. You must receive an approved extension before you can continue with your research. Please email completed forms to researchethics@bowvalleycollege.ca. The REB will review it within two weeks and notify you of their decision.

To maintain your ethics approval, you must report to the REB at several key points during your research project. The REB gives ethics approval for one year. If your research takes longer than one year, you will have to submit a Continuing Review Form to the REB and receive approval. This must be done before your original ethics approval expires. You will receive a decision about your ongoing approval within 2 weeks of submission.

Once your project is complete, you will need to submit a Study Completion Report to the REB, as well as a copy of your final report.

Informed consent is an important part of the ethics approval process. It informs your potential participants about any risk(s) associated with your study, what they will be asked to do, and how their data will be used, stored, and protected.
