From Bow Valley College employee to graduate

This morning, the Registrar’s Kanchana Amararajan will receive her Business Administration Diploma.

As a client services representative in the Office of the Registrar, Kanchana Amararajan’s role at convocation is usually to manage the procession. But this morning, she’ll be walking in the procession as a graduate of the Chiu School of Business

Having been a Bow Valley College employee for ten years, Kanchana was so impressed by our graduates’ success in the workplace that it inspired her to enrol in a diploma at the institution.

“I have seen our students, how they leave the College with so much confidence and so much knowledge and skill. When I go to the bank and the hospital, I always see our students, they're very happy and successful in their career,” says Kanchana.

She adds that when she runs into these graduates, they’re very happy in the workforce, and before enrolling, she knew Bow Valley College prepares its graduates for the workforce’s challenges.

Kanchana already had three degrees from her home country of India — a Bachelor of Law, a Bachelor of Science, and a Bachelor of Education. But when she moved to Calgary, she got a job at Scotiabank, and became interested in business. “I feel everyone should know something about business,” she says. “It teaches you customer service skills, it teaches you business communication, how to manage money, how to invest. Business knowledge is an integral part of any profession.”

She had completed an accounting applications certificate at SAIT, but wanted to do more. She signed up for the Business Administration Diploma, Human Resources Major here at Bow Valley College.

She took most of her courses online so she could continue to work full-time. To balance her priorities of school, work, and her family (Kanchana has two adult children in their 20s), she used planning, prioritizing, time management, and compartmentalization techniques. “I was able to do everything because I have a passion for studying,” she says.

Later this morning, at today’s first of two convocation ceremonies at the Jack Singer Concert Hall, Kanchana will move the tassel of her cap from right to left, a symbol of graduation traditionally performed at convocation ceremonies.

“I’m proud to be a student graduating from Bow Valley College,” she says.

Watch the live webcast of convocation. The Chiu School of Business ceremony begins at 9 a.m. MST, and the School of Community Studies, School of Creative Technologies, and School of Health and Wellness ceremony starts at 2 p.m. MST.
