Covid-19 Bursary: Juggling Studies And Childcare During The Pandemic
Bow Valley College student Karem Valdes has been juggling her studies and caring for her two children since the COVID-19 crisis began in Calgary in March.
Karem has been a student in the Business Administration Diploma program, with a major in Financial Services, since Fall 2018.
“As a mother I need to care for my children and study with them, continue my diploma studies online, and support my family,” Karem said.
Another challenge Karem faced due to the crisis is losing her job. She applied for the COVID-19 Response Emergency Financial Need Bursary and said the College’s response was immediate. The bursary helped her pay her tuition fees for her final semester of studies.
Karem said after completing her studies, she hopes to continue her career in the financial sector. Prior to studying at Bow Valley College, she worked for 18 years in insurance and banking institutions.
She praised her instructors at the College for working to provide learners with the skills to achieve their goals.
“I will look for a job according to my diploma in the financial field,” she said. “I know that with the knowledge acquired, I will achieve my personal goals, despite the current situation due to COVID-19.”
