More flexibility. More time for family.

A career in digital marketing has given Diana Tare more time with her husband and son.

Diana Tare wanted a career that would give her more time to spend with her family. 

Back in her home country of the Philippines, she worked as a nurse and high school teacher, but after immigrating to Canada with her family in July 2016, she got a job teaching in a daycare. She loved it, but wanted more time with her husband and her five-year-old son, Nigel. “Working eight hours in a daycare plus the travel time made it so hard [to spend time with my family] because by the time that I got home, I’d be just so exhausted,” she says. 

Diana didn’t want to go back to teaching high school as she didn’t have enough flexibility in that career either. After researching other options, she found digital marketing: a path that would let her work remotely. Diana chose the Digital Marketing Post-Diploma Certificate at Bow Valley College for the breadth of the program’s curriculum. She also found the Office of the Registrar staff very friendly when she was enrolling.  

At the College, one of the skills she enjoyed learning the most was coding, which she learned in her Web Design and Development for Digital Marketing course. “I never thought I would be able to do that, but our instructor’s support in making sure we learned something after each class is truly appreciated,” she says, referring to David Piechnik.

She also liked getting to know her classmates who were from different cultural, educational, and professional backgrounds. “[This] enabled me to network while still at school and allowed us to collaborate well in group work.”

She is also grateful for receiving a bursary from the Bow Valley College Awards Office, which assisted her with child care. 

Diana completed her courses in August 2018 as a student in the first cohort of the post-diploma certificate. By October, she got a job as a digital project manager for Third Team, an e-commerce company based in the Philippines. Working remotely from Calgary, she handles their local and international accounts, editing content, communicating deadlines with her team, and creating end-of-month reports. Diana says the job “absolutely” allows her to spend more time with her husband and son, giving her the chance to leave the house with them as long as she’s connected to WiFi. 

In her spare time, she is offering digital marketing services to immigrants who are looking for a job or starting their own business. “My long-term plan is to build my own agency,” she says. “Therefore, I have to start with a niche that I feel connected with. That's why I decided to start working with this group because I know the struggles of being an immigrant.”

She helps her clients create a LinkedIn or Facebook profile so they can connect with companies or individuals while they transition to Canadian life. 

In February, Diana was the valedictorian at the convocation for the School of Community Studies, the School of Creative Technologies, and the School of Health and Wellness. “[Bow Valley College] offered me a bridge towards my goal,” she said in the convocation program. “It was a training ground and a place to see that it’s okay to make mistakes because there are instructors who are very willing to help.”
