Honorlock

Honorlock is a tool that your instructor might use when you are taking an exam at Bow Valley College. It creates a secure testing environment by using your webcam, microphone, and recording your screen.

The following information will explain the technical requirements and provide information on taking an exam with Honorlock.

If you would like to practice taking a quiz with Honorlock, please check out the Quizzes section in the LSS101 D2L Brightspace course.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your instructor.

The following video and instructions will walk you through the process of taking an exam with Honorlock

Bow Valley College must follow certification rules for certain programs that require a live person to monitor a learner during an exam. Think of it as the virtual version of writing an exam on campus with an instructor in the classroom.

Honorlock requires the following:

  • Laptop or desktop computer (Mac, PC, or Chromebook)
  • Webcam (built-in or external)
  • Microphone (built-in or external)
  • A single monitor (a second monitor cannot be used)
  • A solid Internet connection (at least 1.5 Mbps download and 750 Kbps upload)
  • Google Chrome web browser
  • The Honorlock Google Chrome browser extension - Download it here.
  • If you are using a laptop, we recommend keeping it plugged in during the exam

PLEASE NOTE Tablets (such as iPads) and Smartphones do not work with Honorlock

You can perform a system test on your device by going to the following page: https://honorlock.com/support/

You may be asked for a password for the practice test or a course exam. This is not required. If you are asked for a password, you will need to restart your computer. When your computer starts again, make sure to shut down any applications that open automatically, so they are not detected and recorded as suspicious behaviour. Then you can log into D2L again and open the exam.

  • Make sure you have taken the practice Honorlock exam.
  • Make sure you are in a quiet, private environment.
  • Ensure that there is proper lighting so the proctor can see you clearly.
  • Remove all electronic devices including cell phones, tablets, smart watches, etc. from the room.
  • Clean up your workspace, remove all physical or digital items that are not allowed. This includes pens, pencils, textbooks, notes, scrap papers, etc.
  • Have valid photo identification such as: Bow Valley College student ID, driver’s license, government ID, or passport.
  • Remove hats, sunglasses, and headphone or ear buds.
  • Remove all outerwear such as sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets.

The following instructions will walk you through the process of taking an exam with Honorlock.

  1. Open the Google Chrome web browser

  2. Select the course that contains the exam

  3. Click Assessments
  4. Click Quizzes on the drop-down menu

  5. Click the exam that you need to complete

  6. If you do not already have the Honorlock extension installed, you will need to check the ‘I agree to Honorlock’s Terms of Services and Privacy Policy’ box and then click ‘GET STARTED’.

  7. A new tab will open where you can install the Honorlock extension. Click ‘Add to Chrome’.

  8. After installing the Honorlock extension, you will be taken back to your exam page. Click ‘Launch Proctering’.

  9. Google Chrome may ask you to allow Honorlock to use your microphone and camera. Click ‘Allow’ on the pop up.

  10. Honorlock will then take a photo. Make sure you are clearly visible, centre your face in the frame, and then click ‘Take Photo’.

  11. You will be asked to show valid photo ID. Acceptable ID includes: your Bow Valley College student ID, driver’s license, government ID, or passport. When you have your ID ready, click “I HAVE MY ID!”
  12. Hold your ID in the centre of the webcam and ensure that the picture and name is clearly visible. Use the box as a guideline and click “TAKE ID PHOTO”.

  13. You will then be asked to perform a 360° scan of your room and working area. You will need to physically move your laptop or webcam to do this. During the scan, ensure that you show your entire work area. You may be asked to show your ears to ensure that you are not wearing earbuds or headphones. If you are wearing glasses you will be required to show the front, back, and sides of your glasses. When you are ready to start the scan, click ‘BEGIN ROOM SCAN’.
For specific information about what you need to show during the room scan, please contact your instructor prior to the exam.
  14. Once you have shown your work area, click “I’M DONE”.
  15. You will have the opportunity to review your room scan. If you are satisfied with the video, click ‘YES, SUBMIT’.
Failure to properly show your environment in the room scan may break the Academic Honesty Policy.

  16. After the room scan is complete, you will be asked to share your screen. This allows your instructor and the proctor to see anything and everything that you have open during your exam. Close any other applications or programs and then click ‘LAUNCH SCREEN RECORDING’.
  17. You will be asked one more time to share your screen. When ready, select the preview of your screen and then click ‘Share’.
  18. To start your exam, click ‘CLICK TO BEGIN’.
  19. Your exam will load and you will be able to answer the questions. Once you have answered all the questions, click ‘Submit Quiz’.
If you have any technical issues during the exam, you will also be able to click the chat icon in the bottom-right
corner of the screen and communicate with a live proctor.
Any issues during the exam will also be reported to your instructor.

Once the exam has been submitted, it will be reviewed, and any issues will be investigated. Academic honesty is a serious offense and failure to follow the Academic Honest Policy may result in consequences.

You can read Bow Valley College’s Academic Honest Policy here: Academic Honesty Policy

If something goes wrong during the exam, do NOT close your exam and contact your instructor. They will not be able to help you. Instead, contact Honorlock support. They are available 24/7 and can be reached through the live chat. All issues will be reported to your instructor.
