Mental Health and Wellness Training

Learner Success Services at Bow Valley College is offering free training to Bow Valley College staff, faculty and students who work with and/ or care for people. These training programs will assist you with recognizing and acting to support mental health and wellness in others.

Due to the certification of each workshop, minimum enrollment is required. As such, workshops can be canceled due to low enrollment, at any time.

The Inquiring Mind

In line with Bow Valley College's HIVE strategy (Healthy Institutions Valuing Engagement) we are pleased to offer The Inquiring Mind training as a workshop that increases mental health literacy.

This 3.5 hour workshop is an education based prevention program that addresses mental health and well-being in post-secondary students.

The program covers three main components:
* stigma reduction
* resiliency skills
* the mental health continuum model

ASIST Tune Up

If you have taken the two-day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) within the last three years, you can extend your certification for 2 additional years by taking this Tune Up. Proof of prior ASIST attendance is required to attend the ASIST TuneUp.

Suicide Prevention Training 

In this difficult time, people are struggling with increased stress and anxiety. Suicide prevention skills are needed more than ever.  As part of our Campus Mental Health Strategy (HIVE) and our Post-Secondary Mental Health grant, we are offering free registration in a one-hour online course for students, faculty and staff. LivingWorks START teaches individuals to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support.

QPR Gatekeeper Training

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. This 1.5 hour training teaches community members the skills to recognize and support people who may be having thoughts of suicide. Through this training, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to:
    • Understand the common causes of suicidal behavior
    • Recognize the warning signs of suicide
    • Get help for someone in crisis and prevent suicide

Mental Health First Aid

This 14 hour workshop will teach you basic information on various mental illnesses, how to promote the recovery of good mental health, and the resources available to help support someone with a mental health concern.

The founders of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) present, SafeTALK;  a half-day (3.5 hour) suicide alertness certification that prepares anyone 16 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper.

Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services 

First Responders to Sexual Assault and Abuse

This training is beneficial to both students and employees at Bow Valley College to learn how to identify and respond to people impacted by sexual violence. Bow Valley College community members will increase their skills and confidence to address sexual abuse and sexual assault, both on and off campus.

Creating a Culture of Consent: Community Bystander Interventions


Workshop hosted by: Centre for Sexuality

In this workshop, participants will increase their knowledge and identify how media and society perpetuate harmful messages about consent, relationships, and sexual violence. We will explore and discuss the bystander effect and some common barriers to intervention. Participants will also learn practical tools that will prepare them to recognize when and how they can be active bystanders.

Bystander Intervention training is open to students and staff.

Kairos Blanket Exercise

Reconciliation through Education and Understanding

The Kairos Blanket Exercise program is a unique, participatory history lesson – developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers and educators – that fosters truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
