Award guidelines
Scholarships and bursaries are available for all BVC learners. Please note that not everyone who applies will be chosen. A review panel looks at each application and chooses recipients based on the criteria set for the award. In order to find out what awards you can apply for, you will need to log into the student awards portal: bvcawards.awardspring.ca
You're considered a full-time student if you are:
- On a reduced course load approved by the Alberta Government
- Taking a modified course load approved by the College
Award types
- Scholarship: an award usually given in recognition of excellence in academic achievement (other criteria or conditions may apply).
- Bursary: an award given on the basis of financial need (other criteria or conditions may apply).
- Award: any financial help or payment (grant, loan, scholarship, bursary, or prize).
- Prize: an award given to a student in recognition of a significant accomplishment — prizes may include books, plaques, medals, subscriptions, or cash).
The following are definitions of terms often used in relation to awards:
- Alumni: students who have graduated or completed their program goal.
- Application: students complete an electronic application form available at bvcawards.awardspring.ca.
- Award: any financial help or payment (grant, loan, scholarship, bursary or prize).
- Bursary: an award given on the basis of financial need (other criteria or conditions may apply).
- Enrolled: registered at Bow Valley College and going to classes.
- Entrance Awards: For students who have applied to a full or part-time credit based program for the first time. Also for students registered in a certificate or diploma program for the first time.
- In-course scholarships and bursaries: for students registered in a full-time or part-time credit-based program.
- Nomination: when faculty or student services staff recommend a student for an award — nominations are based on academic achievement, in class leadership, or financial need.
- Reduced course load: students not taking a full course load, but approved for full-time funding — this must be with the recommendation of a medical professional.
- Registered: a student enrolled in Bow Valley College courses.
- Scholarship: an award usually given in recognition of excellence in academic achievement (other criteria or conditions may apply).
