The Academic Success Centre provides free online writing support to all Bow Valley College students!

Writing Support’s hours of availability from September 2021- December 2021 are as follows:

Online only Monday, Friday, and Saturday
In-person and Online Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

You can connect with a Writing Specialist three different ways: Email submission, Online MS Teams appointment, or schedule a Face-to-Face Appointment at the Academic Success Centre (N266).

To email your assignment to a Writing Specialist for review, please follow these steps:

  1. Email writingsupport@bowvalleycollege.ca
  2. Include Assignment for Writing Support in the subject line.
  3. Attach your writing as a Word document (.docx) to the email.
  4. Include any information from your course that gives directions for the assignment – an outline, a rubric, or page from your course syllabus.
  5. Wait for a reply from the Writing Specialist with comments and feedback added to your file. This may be anywhere from 24 to 48 hours.
  6. You can submit the same writing assignment two (2) times for review.

You can book a 30-minute online MS Teams appointment with a Writing Specialist. This will be a live, one-on-one meeting to discuss any questions you have about an upcoming assignment or general concerns about writing in English. To make an appointment, please follow these steps:

  1. Use the booking site: https://v2.waitwhile.com/welcome/ascwriting
  2. Choose a day and time.
  3. Fill out the form with your information. Please use your mybvc.ca email address!
  4. Check to see that you have received a confirmation email for the appointment.
  5. Wait for one of the Writing Specialists to contact you through MS Teams on the scheduled date.

Helpful tips to get the most out of your Online or In-Person Appointment:

  • Make sure you are on-time for your appointment
  • Before you receive Writing Support, read your assignment, and think of what you want to cover in your 30-minute session. Would you like to discuss high order concerns (interpreting assignment or instructor's comments, brainstorming/outlining, development of examples/evidence, logic/coherence of ideas) and/or later order concerns (introduction/conclusion, sentence structure, citation style, word choice, voice)?
  • Other questions you may consider asking the Writing Specialist are: Is the main point clear in this essay? Do my transitions work? Are there enough details to make this interesting?
  • BVC is trying to go paperless. Please email your assignment and any instructions/rubric to: Writingsupport@bowvalleycollege.ca
  • If you are at the planning stage of your writing, bring a list of questions or possible ideas to discuss.
  • Bring a pen. You may want to bring extra paper if you want to take notes
