Organized by Chartered Professionals in Human Resources of Alberta (CPHR Alberta), this two-day competition is a unique opportunity for students to test their classroom learning through practical simulations of human resource (HR) specific cases that are based on a real HR situations.

2018 HRC West Case Competition

Hosted at SAIT on March 2nd and 3rd, this competition is one of CPHR Alberta’s efforts to engage with post-secondary students and institutions. The goal is to invest in Canada’s future human resources (HR) professionals and provide them with an excellent opportunity to put their skills into action. This year’s event included teams from 16 post-secondary institutions from the western provinces.

We are excited to announce that this was Bow Valley College’s first team competing in this competition and we are proud of the positive representation they exemplified. The selected team included human resource students, Christian Inocencio, Joelle Mason, Julia Volokhova, and Mohamed Shamma and team coaches Landis Jackson, Lead HR Instructor, and Heather Martin, Business Strategy Instructor.   In January, the team began by practicing case studies while working to get their timing down to finish in under three hours. Mohamed maintains that, “the process worked and we were confident the moment we stepped into the room. We knew what to do.”

Their hard work and preparation was rewarded when they realized that their technical and strategic approach was consistent with the four finalists. “We felt we had all the knowledge that the top teams had,” stated Joelle. Although they didn’t place in the top four, the students all agreed that Bow Valley College is a contender to place well in future competitions.

“I improved a lot - my self-confidence, timing, how to focus on the right things, and how to prioritize,” says Julia. All team members acknowledged that their skills had further developed and were grateful for the opportunity.  “I’m proud of all of us including Heather and Landis. The whole team did really well,” stated Christian. Every team member expressed an interest in volunteering to help guide next year’s team.
