Tsegereda Abraham was pregnant when she arrived in Canada. Soon after her child was born, she had to leave her unhealthy marriage.

Alone and speaking only a few words of English, Tsegereda chose Bow Valley College to upgrade and build a good life.

Living with almost no income and trying to raise her daughter, she persevered. Because of the support she received from generous Calgarians through 1000 Women Rising, Tsegereda realized her childhood dream when she graduated from the Practical Nurse Diploma program.

Tsegereda is raising her six-year-old daughter and loves her job in an extended care facility. Her next step is becoming a registered nurse.

ANITA
DAGHER

Anita Dagher loves her job. As a recruiter, she gets to helps others find their dream job.

Anita studied business administration at Bow Valley College. She found a community, made friends, and credits the instructors and student services
that helped her succeed.

But she also became a victim of fraud, and her bank account was cleared out. With two children with disabilities and a tough program to complete, Anita needed to pay for child care, bus fare, clothing, groceries, and rent so
she could stay in school.

Today, Anita mentors other students and volunteers at Bow Valley College.

RAVEN
SINCLAIR

Raven Sinclair wanted a better life. She came to Bow Valley College (then Alberta Vocational Centre) in 1991 to take a university entrance program. She discovered that university was not for her and she returned to administrative work.

Raven is a survivor of Canada’s Sixties Scoop, when Indigenous children were taken from their parents. She had a lot to overcome. She has five grown children.

Inspired to help her Indigenous community, she came back to Bow Valley College. She is in her second year in the addiction studies program.

It wasn’t easy. Raven was homeless and grieving the death of her parents while she attended school. The money she received from 1000 Women Rising helped.

SHAWNA
YOUNG

At six o’clock every morning, Shawna Young dropped her daughter off at daycare and went to class at Bow Valley College.

Married young, she wanted a meaningful career after her marriage broke up – and she was willing to work hard for that. The Practical Nurse Diploma program was challenging, but Shawna persevered. She graduated last year.

The money she received from caring individuals who gave to 1000 Women
Rising helped pay for child care, groceries, and transportation.

“That money saved me from dropping out,” she says.

Now Shawna feels privileged to help others. She’s proud to be a good role model for her six-year-old daughter.
